If there is one thing that is still an anomaly out there, its tyres and understanding their function
with your car. Yes, we all know that without tyres, your car would be rendered useless, but what about tyre wear? And how does tyre wear affect your vehicles performance and efficiency.
At Murley, not only can we look after your vehicle in repsect of servicing and repairs, but we care about the state of your vehicle too and sometimes tyres can become a concern, to a point where we would like you to understand what implications are out there with a tyre that is significantly worn.
Not only do worn tyres increase stopping distances on your car, but if they fall below the legal limit of 1.6mm, then you face a hefty penalty fine and points on your drivers licence.
We all like to get as much out of something for what we pay for, but you are taking huge risks if your tyres are not road legal and hopefully our guide will help you determine when you need to have these checked.
Seeing a tread pattern on the tyres is a good start, but the tread depth is the highlight here. All brand new tyres start off with an 8mm tread, which are the industry standard. As your vehicle is used and the miles mount up, the tread decreases, but your driving doesn’t.
The stopping distance increases with wear too and it could be a matter of a few inches or a few feet, depending on the state of the tyre.
If you have any doubts about your tyre wear, please book an appointment at one of our branches to have a free tyre inspection carried out. If we are happy with your tyres, then it will give you a peace of mind that you have some time to go before replacement is needed.
If we have concerns, we will show you what the concerns are and advise you to have tyres replaced as a matter of urgency.

Currently okay. Monitor tyre wear as directed by your Murley service advisor.
In an independent survey, a tyre at 3mm of tread or less, you are 62% more likely to be involved in an accident that was a cause of low tread on your tyres. Regular checks to your tyres will help keep your vehicle in shape and provide you with the performance and effiency that you expect.
If you feel your tyres are wearing prematurely, then please book an appointment with Murley and we will check to see if there are any underlying problems that may be causing the issue.
